…..

Angelo’s new home was a fortified bunker surrounded by his people in an influential section of town. Angelica had left Al with the girl knowing that she wasn’t going to get anything out of her soon. They had to knock her out when she started clawing at her arms, trying to rip at her wrists. No one tried to stop her from entering the compound, though the tension that poured from the men she passed hung heavy in the air.

Hatred seeped from Camilla, though you couldn’t tell by looking at her. Ignoring it all, she followed the lone soldier who stiffly walked in front of her, leading her to her destination. He stepped aside just in front of the door, allowing her to enter before silently closing it behind her.

“I can’t say I’m surprised to see you, though I can say it’s unwanted,” Angelo said, motioning her forward. He waited for her to sit down before continuing. “I have known and trusted Al for years, but I should have expected this. He never said it; he never once showed it in the time since you came back until now, but he was loyal to you even above the family.”

“You couldn’t be more wrong, Angelo. Al is loyal to me because I am family, which you seem to have forgotten.”

“It hasn’t been forgotten, Angelica—how could it? I’m reminded each time I look to advance my family’s interests. Over the years there have always been whispers about you, but now they don’t whisper; they slyly ask. If you were a man this wouldn’t have been such an issue, but as a daughter of our house? Let us say it has put my family in an unattainable situation.”

“Is that why you kept Michael’s son from him, Angelo? Was that unattainable situation going to be easily surmounted by an advantageous marriage?”

“I had no idea that the boy was Michael’s. I’d never put money above family.”

“No, just power.”

“I think our discussion is over.”

“No, Angelo, it isn’t. Why didn’t you tell Michael I was here in town?”

“Because you’re poison, and I didn’t want Michael exposed to you. Everything you touch dies. Besides I didn’t think he’d want to know. He has done everything but tell you straight out that he wants nothing to do with you.”

“Of course he doesn’t, Angelo. Why would he after you broke your word?”

“I don’t know what you’re talking about.”

“Really? Angelo, did you think I didn’t know? Did you think that I wouldn’t figure it all out?” she said to him, shaking her head when she saw his hand move under the desk. “I wouldn’t if I were you.” Disgust she didn’t bother to hide filled her voice. “I’ve known for years that you told Camilla, then allowed her to turn Michael against me. I allowed it because I couldn’t take anything more from you, but I can see I was wrong.”

Standing up she looked down on him. “I lost my brother because you couldn’t keep your word, and he lost his son because you were too much of a coward to face the consequences of your actions.
